Weißenstein Castle
by FRE-Photography
Weissenstein Castle in Pommersfelden was built between 1711 and 1718 by Lothar Franz von Schönborn, Prince-Bishop of Bamberg and Elector of Mainz. Johann Dientzenhofer was hired as an architect, but Viennese court architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and Maximilian von Welsch were also involved in the planning of the palace complex.
With the magnificent building, Lothar Franz Graf von Schönborn created a private summer residence near his Bamberg headquarters according to his personal taste and fashion at the time. This was made possible by a donation from Emperor Charles VI.
The seven-year construction period was followed by another 10 years for the interior. Here too, Prince Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn engaged the most famous artists of his time.
Weissenstein Castle in Pommersfelden has survived all wars unscathed in its 300-year history and is therefore one of the best preserved castle complexes of its era.
